Whether it’s a simple logo refresh, or creating a brand from scratch, there is a lot that goes into logo creation, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Your logo is the face of your brand, and it should evoke emotion from consumers and accurately convey your brand’s personality.
Although some might think that graphic design is subjective, there are many best practices and basics that should be considered prior to branding. Here are our four tips for great logo design:
Keep it Simple
As much as possible, try to avoid the “busy” look. It is important that logos are simple, inviting, and easy to read. This means that a logo should use a maximum of two fonts, and a minimal number of colors. If you want to add a little spice and keep within this guideline, try to balance between two font weights or add pops of a bright color that complement the others. Remember: simple doesn’t mean boring!
Make it Unique
This is where creativity comes into play – and where our team excels. Always remember to think outside of the box. Doing something that has already been done, especially by an already well-established brand, will lead to consumer confusion and an unremarkable logo.
Ensure it is Timeless
Utilize fonts, colors, and design elements that will have a long shelf life. Try to avoid hopping on short-lived design trend trains that will come and go in the blink of an eye. Establishing a brand takes time, so having a logo that can last will ensure you get the most out of your money. Also, be sure that your logo is usable and readable on a variety of different platforms (think print, social, email, banners, etc.)
While it is important to have a timeless logo, also keep in mind that the time will come when you are in need of a refresh. When that day comes, try not to stray too much from your original logo, especially if you have an established consumer base who might be confused with a totally new look. Try a few small tweaks to simplify or modernize the logo, but keep your brand history alive.
Stay Authentic
This is the most important, as it encourages you to think about what you want the first impression of your brand to be. What kind of products and services do you offer? What is your brand mission? How do you want consumers to feel when they see your logo? You can tell a lot about a brand just from the graphics, colors, and fonts that make up their logo. Ensure that every choice you make within your logo design is done with intention, and be truly authentic.
