We make it our mission at 834 to support students, young professionals and those progressing in their careers…hence today’s #YourBizYourTown. We are featuring a student PR group, a PR collaborative that offers support to nonprofits and a student-run PR agency.
Hmm…you would think we are a communications firm or something. Odd.
Grand PR:
GrandPR is a nationally affiliated, student-run public relations firm created and managed by student professionals attending Grand Valley State University.  The staff is made up of over 20 student professionals, bringing together previous internship, educational, and personal experiences to produce quality work for their REAL clients.
PR for Good:
Every two years, the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America (WMPRSA) selects an area nonprofit and provides it with two years of pro bono public relations counsel.  The goal is to increase the visibility of the selected organization and help bolster its ability to develop relationships with media and other influencers in the community.  Over the course of the two-year commitment, the WMPRSA also helps its PR for Good clients work toward achieving self-sustaining communications independence.  Nonprofit organization can apply to become a PR for Good client during the WMPRSA’s bi-annual nonprofit seminar.
This year WMPRSA chose the Women’s Resource Center. Women’s Resource Center’s strategic plan is to work with West Michigan’s most vulnerable women to break their personal barriers to employment and a sustainable wage. Our mission is to improve women’s workplace and economic opportunities. Our organization represents a stabilizing force that focuses on no-cost skills training, guidance and resources to provide economic security for women and their families.
Please help the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) be selected as the charity partner for the 2015 Gazelle Girl’s Half Marathon. The charity partner is selected by popular vote. This is a huge opportunity for the WRC. Being selected as the race’s charity partner equates to approximately $10,000 in funding for the nonprofit. They’re up against solid competition – so let’s be sure to do our part to help them win. This is a low-involvement way to help our PR for Good partner – so please vote and share with your networks. Voting is open from 10/20 to 10/31. Click here to vote!
PRSSA:
PRSSA is the student run Grand Valley State University Public Relations (Student) Society of America chapter. Students are encouraged to join while in college to grow their professional network, meet working professionals and to expand on their classroom learning.  The group has several upcoming events that local professionals can support or get involved with.
Take our word for it, giving back to up-and-coming professionals feels good and is a great way to spot new talent.

Something on Your Mind?

Running 8THIRTYFOUR on EOS has allowed our team to find consistency in what we do and given us a framework to hold each other accountable.

It's why @bodespeaks highlighted it in her latest @fastcompany contribution.

We put everything business owners, employees, and educators told us on the wall, and guess what... yeah, some of it was mean.

The point is, everyone is saying it about each other, not to each other, and nothing is getting fixed that way.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to have the Uncomfortable Conversation on the skills crisis, and whether you were there or not, let us know what the next one should be.

Defense and manufacturing run on precision, protocols, and deadlines. When a team miscommunicates... things slip, and the cost adds up.

Kim will be at the Michigan Defense Expo in Detroit on May 13 to talk about the Hard Cost of Soft Skills (or as we call them, survival skills) and what we can all do about it.

@bodespeaks will be talking to @sheleadssocietymi on May 21 about Big Deal Energyâ„¢ and what it means to own what makes you - you.

Don't let mediocre men tell you you're too much. That's on them.

Come to the talk, it'll be fun. Link in bio.
We always say work smarter, which means bringing in expertise you don't have and hiring people who make your team more complete.

That's what Kim Bode said in a recent @fastcompany article on building sustainability into your business.
