Veterans, Pride and Beer – Your Biz Your Town

Share the goods.

Each 4th Friday of the month, we get to sit down and chat with Grand Rapids’ darling – Shelley Irwin. Topics range from nonprofits doing good, events highlighting our great city or cause and small businesses giving back.
This week we chatted with Honor Construction, Grand Rapids Pride on their upcoming festival, Pike 51 Brewery and Hudsonville Winery.
Below is a snapshot of each business, we encourage you to connect via Twitter, Facebook or email.
Honor Construction Folds of Honor Golf Outing:
Of the one million-plus dependents adversely affected by deployments, nearly 9 out of 10 do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Since 2007, the Folds of Honor has carried forth this singular, noble mission. To close the gap, providing educational support to spouses and children of America’s fallen and wounded soldiers.
The Patriot Day Golf Outing is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association. In the last eight years, golfers nationwide have been instrumental in raising donations through Patriot Golf Day events, resulting in over 7,500 scholarships in all 50 states and 41 PGA sections.
If you are interested in joining our mission to empower the lives of deserving military families with educational opportunities, sign up for a day of golf and gratitude! There are multiple ways to get involved:

Pike 51/Hudsonville Winery Anniversary Party:
On June 11, we’re inviting the whole community to raise a glass – beer or wine, it doesn’t matter – to Hudsonville Winery and Pike 51 Brewery Co. in honor of each establishment’s anniversary. Our winery will be turning seven and our brewery will be turning four, and we want to be alongside the people who have helped make both a success over the past few years.
It was intentional to give the two the same anniversary date. We thought it would be appropriate for the brewery to make its formal debut on during the winery’s anniversary. We held a few soft openings beforehand, but we made sure the official Pike 51 Brewery Co. ribbon cutting and open house happened on Hudsonville Winery’s third anniversary party. Like how we planned our winery and brewery to operate together, we planned our annual celebration to be as such. Beer lovers and wine lovers shouldn’t be separated – they should enjoy their preferred beverage side by side in delicious harmony.
This year’s anniversary party will have everything that made our previous ones successful: beer, wine, food, music, friends. For our beer lovers, we’ll be releasing Heavy Soul, our imperial milk porter aged in bourbon barrels. For food lovers, we’re bringing in a pig roast food menu just for the event.
The party starts at noon and goes until we close, and admission is free! Get wild, have fun and call an Uber at the end of the night.

National Perimenopause Month starts today. We have a LOT to say, and we’re not going to be quiet about it, especially this month, so buckle up.

We were not prepared for perimenopause, much like our periods, sex, or anything else to do with our bodies. God forbid we talk about it openly.

We were taught to be ashamed, keep quiet, and to accept that it is just part of being a woman. We reject that narrative. In fact, like @bodespeaks, we want to bring it up in every conversation.

When we normalize perimenopause and the conversation around it, we stop isolating, and we’re all more prepared.
