Post-Thanksgiving – Your Biz, Your Town

Share This Post:

We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing, food-filled holiday with family. For us, it is time to get back to work and we can’t think of a better group of people and organizations to spend our post-Thanksgiving holiday with.

For those of you that need a reminder, Your Biz, Your Town is a monthly radio segment that 834 hosts with Shelley Irwin on the WGVU Morning Show, on 88.5 FM.

As always we turn the spotlight on non-profit organizations, events and other great things happening in our community. This segment is no different.

We chatted with Saint Mary’s Health Care, the Grand Rapids Red Project and the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute on 2 upcoming events supporting great causes.

The 8th Annual Saint Mary’s Health Care Shoppe Soirée will take place on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Thousand Oaks Golf Course. Ticket prices are $35 before November 21, and $40 after November 21. Proceeds will benefit the Personal Care Area of The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s Health Care.

Mix, mingle and shop over dessert & cocktails all the while supporting a great cause. Hotel Venus and Renewal Skin Spa will be on hand to offer special hair and spa services at the event with proceeds being donated back to Saint Mary’s Foundation.

Another great event is taking place on Saturday, December 1, 2012The Grand Rapids Red Project will host World AIDS Day at Wealthy Theatre by bringing  reality TV star, Jake Mossop of MTV’s “1 Girl 5 Gays” for an interactive discussion to increase awareness and information about HIV/AIDS in the Greater Grand Rapids area. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the program will begin at 8 p.m. at the Wealthy Street Theatre.

Mossop and a panel of individuals from the community will be discussing the status of HIV in the world today, with a focus on Kent County statistics and information. This event is free and open to the public.  Donations are suggested and will help combat HIV right here in Grand Rapids.  There is a limited amount of reserved VIP seating available along with the chance to meet Mossop.

The event is completely FREE.

Today’s show addressed two very serious topics – AIDS and Cancer. Both organizations have found educational and fun ways to initiate discussion and support around both issues in our community. I encourage you to support both of these organizations, whether it is through a cash donation, volunteering or by attending the upcoming events.

Something on Your Mind?

Running 8THIRTYFOUR on EOS has allowed our team to find consistency in what we do and given us a framework to hold each other accountable.

It's why @bodespeaks highlighted it in her latest @fastcompany contribution.

We put everything business owners, employees, and educators told us on the wall, and guess what... yeah, some of it was mean.

The point is, everyone is saying it about each other, not to each other, and nothing is getting fixed that way.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to have the Uncomfortable Conversation on the skills crisis, and whether you were there or not, let us know what the next one should be.

Defense and manufacturing run on precision, protocols, and deadlines. When a team miscommunicates... things slip, and the cost adds up.

Kim will be at the Michigan Defense Expo in Detroit on May 13 to talk about the Hard Cost of Soft Skills (or as we call them, survival skills) and what we can all do about it.

We always say work smarter, which means bringing in expertise you don't have and hiring people who make your team more complete.

That's what Kim Bode said in a recent @fastcompany article on building sustainability into your business.
