Core Value #1: We Fix It

Share This Post:

You probably know by now that 8THIRTYFOUR isn’t your typical agency. No, we have a million crazy dogs, we like to jam out to some awesome music, and we win awards like it’s no one’s business (It’s someone’s business. It’s literally Kim’s).
Obviously, we like to have fun. But we can only do that because we work incredibly hard behind the scenes to stay up to date on the latest trends, to constantly push ourselves, and to put data to good use.
We have such a productive and fun team because at the core of everything, we all know what the brand stands for. We call these traits our Core Values, and there are five of them in total. Today, we’re going to walk you through our first one, because we think it’s pretty neat. What’s that Core Value? “We Fix It.”

We Fix It for Clients

This value has an obvious meaning, so we’ll cover that first. When something happens that isn’t what we planned for, we address the problem, correct it, and learn from it.
Look, we aren’t about to pretend that we’re perfect (you wouldn’t believe us if we did, anyway), so you have to understand that since we’re human, we make mistakes sometimes. Rather than dwelling on that, we embrace them, own up to them, tell our clients about them, and fix them. Mistakes and unexpected outcomes are what inspire us to revisit our processes and figure out how to make our agency better.
When it comes down to it, we refuse to make the same mistake twice.

We Fix It for Us

Here’s the other part of this value: sometimes agency life can get rough. Sure, you’ve probably seen us working on a patio somewhere, but life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There are times when we take our work home with us and work long into the night, and that’s fine.
But we also understand that it’s pretty gosh darn important to not work employees (and interns!) to the bone. That’s why we have this value. Does someone in the office seem super stressed? Bam. The rest of the team swoops in to figure out how we can help.
See, 8THIRTYFOUR’s not just an agency. We’re a team, so to us, it matters how everyone is feeling. When one person’s stressed, that brings the team down. We guess you could say that helpfulness is part of our culture.

But Why, “We Fix It?”

Great question. We’re going to tell you a little story.
Once upon a time, there was a cool mid-twenties woman named Kim Bode. She had everything she thought she wanted in life, including a husband, a few dogs, and a killer house. But we all know how this story ends, right? Life isn’t perfect. Sometimes things go wrong.
And they did! Try bankruptcy, a cheating husband, and the loss of that house, and suddenly it’s like we’re looking at a tragedy. But that’s not how Kim works. She pulled up from that, built herself a cool new life, and started an agency. Oh, and that agency? She named it 8THIRTYFOUR, right after the address of the house she lost.
So yeah. You could say “fixing it” is a pretty big part of our brand.

Something on Your Mind?

Running 8THIRTYFOUR on EOS has allowed our team to find consistency in what we do and given us a framework to hold each other accountable.

It's why @bodespeaks highlighted it in her latest @fastcompany contribution.

We put everything business owners, employees, and educators told us on the wall, and guess what... yeah, some of it was mean.

The point is, everyone is saying it about each other, not to each other, and nothing is getting fixed that way.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to have the Uncomfortable Conversation on the skills crisis, and whether you were there or not, let us know what the next one should be.

Defense and manufacturing run on precision, protocols, and deadlines. When a team miscommunicates... things slip, and the cost adds up.

Kim will be at the Michigan Defense Expo in Detroit on May 13 to talk about the Hard Cost of Soft Skills (or as we call them, survival skills) and what we can all do about it.

We always say work smarter, which means bringing in expertise you don't have and hiring people who make your team more complete.

That's what Kim Bode said in a recent @fastcompany article on building sustainability into your business.
