In case you needed a few shows to add to your queue, we present you with these very diverse, quirky, and downright weird shows we are currently obsessing over.

By the way, Schitt’s Creek isn’t on this list because you should’ve already watched it and rewatched it. If you didn’t, you can’t sit with us.

Letterkenny 

If you grew up in the UP or have family from up north, this is the show for you. Sure, there are some episodes that get a little South Park-y (we’re looking at episode three. Just…skip it), but this show is a peek into life in a tiny northern town. It follows Wayne (of course that is his name), who is a farmer in the small Canadian town of Letterkenny, which has a grand total of 5,000 people. Imagine a typical American sitcom with Golden Girls pacing, with 80% of it being improv, and you’ve got Letterkenny. After one season the phrases will start creeping into your everyday vocab.

Alone

If you like Survivor or Naked and Afraid, Alone is your jam. Hell, even if you don’t, this show is reality TV at its best. It takes a handful of survival experts (yes, actual experts. Like the type who train our military) and drops them in the middle of nowhere with a few items they’re allowed to bring. Then, these people have to outlast each other. The catch? They’re completely isolated and have no way of knowing when the other contestants tap out. They could be out there for a few days or several months. They have no idea! It’s great to have on in the background while you’re preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse.

Also, pro tip: Netflix only has the newest season, but Hulu has the five seasons before that. Go binge it all.

True Blood 

Yes, we are well aware that this HBO drama wrapped its seventh and final season in 2014, but sometimes comfort shows come back into your life when you need them most. Our PR Manager, Jules, was on a mission to blast through this campy adaptation of vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, shape-shifters, were-panthers (?) and even demi-Gods before summer. Tall, gorgeous actors like Alexander Skarsgard and Joe Manganiello play SUPPORTING roles in this fantasy horror. Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin can’t seem to stay out of trouble as “Sookie” in this small Parish known as Bon Temps (pronounced “BAWN-TOMPS” by locals).

Basically, if you love a Louisiana southern drawl, a beautiful cast, and the sexier, spookier version of Twilight, then this is the show for you to revisit nearly a decade later. Now someone find Jules a hot vampire to give True Blood to.

Shrill

The highly relatable story of Annie, a woman seeking out ways to change her life without changing her body (an unsurprisingly novel concept in our weight-obsessed culture). Shrill is whip-smart, funny, and insightful in ways that will make you laugh and squirm with discomfort within minutes of each other. It’s not afraid to get real. Like. Really real. 

At one point, the previously soft-spoken Annie throws a brick through the window of her trash-talking Internet Troll’s SUV, and it is exactly as cathartic as it sounds. Trust me. You’ll cheer.

The show stars Aidy Bryant as Annie, a young professional who, after a lifetime of putting up with bad boyfriends and body-shaming bullshit from every direction, decides to kick ass and take names as she forges her career in journalism. This show gets down and dirty with the insidious ways strangers, doctors, coworkers, and even loved ones can dole out fat-shaming without the blink of an eye. With the third and final season freshly dropped on Hulu, there is no better time to dive into this incredibly binge-able, genuine, and delightfully diverse show. 

Tell Me Your Secrets

If you’re the dark, twisted type (all of us at 8THIRTYFOUR) who loves a good crime thriller, look no further. Tell Me Your Secrets is a complex thriller that focuses on three primary characters, each with a troubling past with motives that intersect. Emma is a woman who looked into the eyes of a dangerous killer, John is a serial predator desperate to find redemption, and Mary is trying to find her missing daughter. As each of them is pushed to the edge, their pasts grow murkier.

We can’t tell you more without a spoiler alert, so we have to stop there. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

The Handmaid’s Tale

After an almost two-year hiatus, The Handmaid’s Tale is back with season 4 on Hulu. Although it is dark, eerie, and seems a little deja vu, it’s totally worth the watch. It’s important to note, there are some major trigger warnings to be aware of before you dive in. 

The Handmaid’s Tale is based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood and swiftly transforms into a more realistic version of current events that lead into a spiraling American dystopia. Coming from a team that loves a good binge, this is truly one that you can’t look away from. Have you heard of face acting? Elisabeth Moss is the best face actor in the game. Her strong character role, paired with an incredible performance, make this show a gold-tier drama. Trust us, just watch it. Also, it’s okay if you cover your eyes (We do.)

Community

If this flew under your radar, WTH is wrong with you? With an amazing all-star cast and writers that went on to do really big things, this show is straight-up hilarious.  

Set at a community college in the fictional Colorado town of Greendale, the series stars an ensemble cast consisting of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, and Jim Rash. It makes heavy use of meta-humor and pop culture references, often paying homage to film and television clichés and tropes. Despite struggling in the ratings during its run, Community developed a cult following and received critical acclaim for its acting, direction, and writing, as well as its meta-meta-humor.

Succession

Such a quirky, funny, and smart show. Major Binge Alert! Season 3 can’t come soon enough – We love you, cousin Greg! Succession is an American satirical drama television show. The series centers on the Roy family, the dysfunctional owners of Waystar RoyCo, a global media and hospitality empire, who are fighting for control of the company amid uncertainty about the health of the family’s patriarch.

The Phillips family represented one of the longest-running retail tenures in Grand Rapids history; L.E. Phillips Jewelry in the 1365 Plainfield Ave. building from 1906 until 1973.
Dr. Eva Phillips, a certified and licensed optometrist ran her practice out of the jewelry store’s secondary parlor and was an equal partner in the jewelry store.

Together, they offered a unique one-stop shot which expanded to include appliances, record players, and more. The couple operated the shop through two World Wars and the Great Depression, acting as the neighborhood matriarch and patriarch.

National Perimenopause Month starts today. We have a LOT to say, and we’re not going to be quiet about it, especially this month, so buckle up.

We were not prepared for perimenopause, much like our periods, sex, or anything else to do with our bodies. God forbid we talk about it openly.

We were taught to be ashamed, keep quiet, and to accept that it is just part of being a woman. We reject that narrative. In fact, like @bodespeaks, we want to bring it up in every conversation.

When we normalize perimenopause and the conversation around it, we stop isolating, and we’re all more prepared.
