Your Biz Your Town – February 2014

Every month when we host Your Biz Your Town (#YourBizYourTown) it makes us happy to live and work in Grand Rapids. There is so much good going on in our community from great events, wonderful nonprofits to professionals supporting other professionals – we are happy to be able to highlight just a few amazeball happenings for you.

This month the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan, West Michigan Public Relation Society of America and the Humane Society of West Michigan joined Shelley Irwin and 834 in studio.
Down Syndrome Association, 3.21 Shop!

World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st, a day that celebrates individuals born with 3 copies of chromosome 21, which is unique to those born with Down syndrome. World Down Syndrome Day was created to promote awareness and understanding of Down syndrome and to advocate for inclusion, rights and a better life.
From March 17th through March 23th, the local community will be able to show their support for the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan (DSAWM) and local business through a small $10 donation in exchange for great deals at a wide variety of local businesses throughout West Michigan.

PRoof Awards
Each year West Michigan public relations professionals, agencies and corporate communications teams are invited to enter their best work into the WMPRSA PRoof Awards. It’s that time again. On Thursday, April 24, 2014 during the 29th Annual PRoof Gala we will celebrate the hard work and acknowledge the accomplishments of all winners with a fun evening of food, networking and an awards presentation.

WMPRSA’s annual “Meet the Media” event with its popular “speed pitching” format has always been one of our most highly attended programs.

Humane Society of West Michigan is excited to present the 2nd annual fund raising party, Paws, Claws & Corks!
This extravagant event will feature the hottest restaurants, breweries, and wineries in West Michigan.  Guests will enjoy fabulous cuisine, wonderful wine and beer samples, as well as opportunities to bid on exciting packages including adventures, trips, wine, sports memorabilia and much more!  Most importantly, money raised will benefit the Humane Society of West Michigan in our mission to promote the humane treatment and responsible care of animals in our community through education, example, responsible placement and protection.

FUN FACT FRIDAY: It’s only fitting for us to own a building where a trailblazing female operated her businesses in 1906. The Phillips family represented one of the longest-running retail tenures in Grand Rapids history; L.E. Phillips Jewelry in the 1365 Plainfield Ave. building from 1906 until 1973.
Dr. Eva Phillips, a certified and licensed optometrist ran her practice out of the jewelry store’s secondary parlor and was an equal partner in the jewelry store.

Together, they offered a unique one-stop shot which expanded to include appliances, record players, and more. The couple operated the shop through two World Wars and the Great Depression, acting as the neighborhood matriarch and patriarch.

National Perimenopause Month starts today. We have a LOT to say, and we’re not going to be quiet about it, especially this month, so buckle up.

We were not prepared for perimenopause, much like our periods, sex, or anything else to do with our bodies. God forbid we talk about it openly.

We were taught to be ashamed, keep quiet, and to accept that it is just part of being a woman. We reject that narrative. In fact, like @bodespeaks, we want to bring it up in every conversation.

When we normalize perimenopause and the conversation around it, we stop isolating, and we’re all more prepared.
