How to Stay Focused Around the Holidays

Share the goods.

A winter scene with the words, "This time of year is a great time to really be thoughtful about what you need to accomplish each day, and ensure that you do."

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, according to most. The holidays offer up a special time for many to celebrate and experience meaningful traditions.
For those of us in the office this time of year, it can be challenging to stay focused once the decorations are up, the first quart of Eggnog appears in the company fridge, and strains of holiday music start drifting through the office. But, taking the entire month of December off isn’t often an option.
Here is our short list of tips to stay focused this time of year, inspired by the big guy in the red suit himself and dedicated to our Boss Lady, who just adores all things Christmas, even the annoying songs:

We See You When You’re Sleeping, We Know When You’re Awake

In our city, this week alone offers at least three holiday parties every night of the week, and that is just work, not personal, obligations. Now is not the time to drive yourself into the ground, now is the time to make good decisions so you don’t burn yourself out. Pace yourself and select the right mix of events that will let you see the right people and celebrate. Maybe say “no thank you” to the second glass of champagne. Make sure you are getting rest throughout the season so that your time in the office is productive. No one likes a cranky team member who had too many festive cocktails the night before.

Make a List, and Check It Twice

This may seem obvious, but everyone has their own way of planning for the month, week and day ahead of them. This time of year is a great time to really be thoughtful about what you need to accomplish each day and ensure that you do. Especially if you are going to take time off throughout December and into the New Year, it is key that your projects are up to date and that you are accomplishing something, if not many things, every day. Set yourself up for success by eliminating distractions; it is a great time of year to unsubscribe from email lists that just cause you to get sidetracked or buy another ugly sweater you don’t really need.

You Better Not Pout, You Better Not Cry

This one is a little harder, but we like to be honest around here: the holidays aren’t always joyous. Everyone has different family and friend dynamics, and this time of year can be downright difficult. Work can actually be a great distraction from the stresses of the holiday if you are able to leave your personal life and challenges at the door and focus on the tasks at hand. Be honest with your boss if you are struggling, and seek professional help to assist in your mental health if needed. Sometimes a good cry is necessary, but take care that you are taking care of yourself this season, too. Make time for what matters.
We will be using the above tips as a guide for this holiday season to stay focused – what would you add? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
