Shop Small Part Deux

Share This Post:

There are WAY too many great businesses in our community to narrow it down to one measly blog. It definitely called for a part deux.

Here are some more amazing small businesses to shop at this holiday season, trust me we are not only supporters we are customers as well…like a lot of money has been spent at all of these places.

Rebel

A go-to for any birthday, casual celebration, or holiday, Rebel is simply the cutest store with something for every occasion. Looking to gift a trendy pair of earrings with a claw clip and stickers? What about a set of glasses with a cocktail mixture all ready to go? Rebel has become the hot spot for plant accessories, stationery, accessories, and more—now you just have to check it out for yourself. While we recommend going in store (lots of candles and the vibes are perfection), you can also shop at their website here.

Sparrows

Know a coffee lover? Grab a bag of beans from Sparrows! Sparrows is an affordable coffee fix with cozy in-store vibes in two locations; one located on the East side and the other on the West. Though highly specified in the coffee department, the east side location also offers an in-store shopping experience with various goods from both Marvelous Me Books and Remington Grand Rapids. Whether it’s coffee you want, or a pair of cute earrings or keepsake, Sparrows has a little bit of everything for your holiday shopping needs both in person as well as online.

Vault of Midnight

Need to pick up board games or comics this holiday season?  The Vault of Midnight is a West Michigan staple. Headquartered in Kalamazoo, but with a beautiful location downtown Grand Rapids, right on Monroe Center, the vault offers a burgeoning collection of all your latest nerdy needs—from the most recent comics, to graphic novels and manga, and a huge selection of board games fun for the whole family.  It’s a go-to “nerd store” great for gifts for your family (or yourself!)

Proprietary

The holidays are coming, and that means it’s time to start baking. We’re sure you’ve got cookie exchanges, potlucks, family parties, and a bunch of other events coming up. Plus, who doesn’t love getting a handmade box of cookies for the holidays? We know we do.

Well, instead of grabbing your ingredients from a busy chain, stop by Proprietary. This small business offers ingredients and dried goods in bulk containers. You can fill your own jars to cut back on that pesky wasteful packaging, all while saving money by buying in bulk. Plus, they have a wide selection of nuts and trail mixes. Need a last-minute gift? Toss some in a jar, tie a bow around it, and voila! Holiday perfection.

Twisted Hot Yoga

Our friends at Twisted Hot Yoga love sweating it out. There is no judgment when you walk through the doors of any of their three locations, just a big smile and an amazing group of humans that LOVE yoga.

Not feeling like peopling? Twisted offers an on-demand library for only $55 a month. They have some great deals for November, so check them out. Did we mention they design their own apparel? The owner, Ginya, is one of our favorite humans.

We know we have barely even scratched the surface on all our great businesses, so we’d love for you to share your favs with us. Tag us on social or drop a comment below.

Something on Your Mind?

We put everything business owners, employees, and educators told us on the wall, and guess what... yeah, some of it was mean.

The point is, everyone is saying it about each other, not to each other, and nothing is getting fixed that way.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to have the Uncomfortable Conversation on the skills crisis, and whether you were there or not, let us know what the next one should be.

Defense and manufacturing run on precision, protocols, and deadlines. When a team miscommunicates... things slip, and the cost adds up.

Kim will be at the Michigan Defense Expo in Detroit on May 13 to talk about the Hard Cost of Soft Skills (or as we call them, survival skills) and what we can all do about it.

We always say work smarter, which means bringing in expertise you don't have and hiring people who make your team more complete.

That's what Kim Bode said in a recent @fastcompany article on building sustainability into your business.
