Embracing Our “Geekness”

Share the goods.

A succulent grows out of a planter that is inside of a Storm Trooper mug

Hold onto your pocket protectors and fanny packs, because today is “Embrace Your Geekness Day” and our team is all about it. We know it seems like there is a different “holiday” to celebrate every day (e.g. National Potato Day or National Compliment Your Mirror Day), but as a team full of people with quirky passions, we felt like today was the perfect opportunity for some of us to come clean about our “geekiest” hobbies or passions:

Sarah

Superhero Movies
My older brother is a total geek, so when we were growing up there were always random comic books littered around our house, and we always saw any new superhero movie in the theater. To this day, I still drag my husband to the theater to see my favorites; if there is a new Batman or Superman movie, I am there. Wonder Woman and Black Panther are my current favorites. You HAVE to see movies like this on the big screen.

Kim

History
I love history. Love it. I read anything I can get my hands on that relates to the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam…the list goes on. They are hard subjects and stories to reflect on, but I have always felt it is my duty as an American to learn as much as I can about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to live in a free country. If you get a chance, pick up the books Team of Rivals, Band of Brothers, Nancy Wake: SOE’s Greatest Heroine and Wolves at the Door: The True Story Of America’s Greatest Female Spy.

Emily

Movie Scores
I grew up playing the piano, singing loudly around the house and loving all things related to music. One thing I have always been intrigued by is movie scores. I’m fascinated by how much different music can impact the mood of a scene in a movie. The music playlist on my phone has an embarrassing number of movie scores and I love nothing more than long drives where I can blast the instrumental theme songs from movies like Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator or Titanic. They give me chills every single time!

Crafting
My hobby is hobbies. I dive head first into any craft that I try and as a result, I now have a huge tub full of supplies. Knitting, jewelry-making, painting, woodworking, essential oil-blending, sugar scrub making, scrapbooking, wall-hanging weaving, screen printing; the list goes on and on. My latest purchase was a Dremel tool and drill bits to drill holes in crystals/rocks/glass/stones to make jewelry. Amazon Prime really comes in handy when I need something quickly after an impulsive crafting idea pops in my head. Crafting relaxes me, and I love the satisfaction of looking at something with the knowledge that I made it myself.

Dungeons and Dragons
Are you looking for an activity that will help you make new friends and challenge your creativity? Dungeons and Dragons is just that. It may get a bad rap, but it takes creativity and quick thinking in order to be successful in the game. This makes it the perfect activity to hone some of these skills, while having fun and making friends along the way.

Addictive Strategy Games on Phone
I love playing strategy games on my phone and can get sucked into the apps for hours (outside of 8am to 5pm, of course). I usually find a game that I like and will be addicted to it for a few weeks, and then I will move onto a new one. I’m currently obsessed with Clash of Clans and Sim City. It’s so fun to see the progress you make after playing for a long time and it really makes you use your brain!
We hope you find our geeky activities charming and fun! What else would you expect from a team that loves data and creativity? Need a dose of geek in your life? Let’s grab a cup of coffee!

National Perimenopause Month starts today. We have a LOT to say, and we’re not going to be quiet about it, especially this month, so buckle up.

We were not prepared for perimenopause, much like our periods, sex, or anything else to do with our bodies. God forbid we talk about it openly.

We were taught to be ashamed, keep quiet, and to accept that it is just part of being a woman. We reject that narrative. In fact, like @bodespeaks, we want to bring it up in every conversation.

When we normalize perimenopause and the conversation around it, we stop isolating, and we’re all more prepared.
