Your Biz Your Town has been going now for 5+ years…with the sole purpose to bring awareness to local nonprofits, networking events and businesses giving back to our community. This week’s WGVU segment was no different with Holland Museum and CASA of Kent County joining Shelley Irwin and myself.
CASA of Kent County
CASA — Court Appointed Special Advocates — of Kent County, the only local volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens to become appointed members of the Kent County court system in order to act on behalf of abused or neglected children as they pass through the family court system.
Coming up May 6th, the community has the opportunity to support this amazing nonprofit and get a free lunch. Their Annual Luncheon is an opportunity for the community to learn more about child abuse and neglect in Kent County and the role CASA plays in addressing this problem. It is a quick one-hour luncheon designed to accommodate busy professionals. Lunch is provided by CASA, but we ask that attendees make a contribution to help us accomplish our mission. Holland Museum
We are big supporters of the Holland Museum, and this community landmark needs your support. They provide valuable programs, events and education to the West Michigan community all while preserving the Lakeshore’s history. As it is with any nonprofit, they only exist through the generous support of the local community, find it in your heart (and pocket) to donate to this amazing historical landmark.
Take a few hours and visit the A Hundred Flowers: Phillip A. Harrington Photography from the People’s Republic of China exhibit.
One of the first American journalists to enter Red China was Phillip A. Harrington (1920-2009) from LOOK Magazine. Harrington, the son of former Holland, Michigan mayor, Harry Harrington, traveled with a colleague through Moscow and into China, between December 1956 and January 1957. During his stay, Harrington photographed everyday life in Beijing, Shanghai and surrounding areas, capturing a culture most people in the Western world had never seen.
Over 50 images from Harrington’s time in China, many of which have never been published, are shown at the Museum.
