As usual, Shelley Irwin and I had a packed house on this 4th Friday of the month for Your Biz, Your Town where we talk business news, events and nonprofit happenings.
Each one of our guests today represents something amazing in our community whether it be unity, animal welfare, or stopping the spread of an infectious disease in Grand Rapids, they are all doing great things right here in our town.
Lights in the Night: Where hope takes flight is an ArtPrize entry that will bring thousands to downtown Grand Rapids to launch Chinese Sky Lanterns into the night sky to unify the community around hope.

Join the community for…
-1 night
-5 venues
-15,000+ volunteers
-thousands of sky lanterns
-500,000+ photographs
-1,000,000+ emotional moments
-1 city united in hope
Volunteer to assist in this historic event here or sponsor a lantern here. Follow them on Twitter and like them on Facebook.
Bailey’s Doggie Dash is a fun event for you and your furry best friend  taking place on October 20th at Wabasis Park, just outside Grand Rapids. The Kent County Parks Foundation is partnering with Kevin Sweeney of the Michigan State Police to host the 13th Annual Bailey’s Doggie Dash. The event is a 5K Run/Walk and a 1-mile (walk) for owners and their dogs. It is to be held at Wabasis Park in Rockford on Saturday, October 20th at 9 a.m. Great fun for families and their dogs to come out and explore Wabasis Park and the beautiful fall colors! For more information, go to our website and you can print off a registration form: www.kentcountyparksfoundation.org
To encourage your participation, I have included a picture of one of my dogs. 834 is also a proud sponsor of Bailey’s Doggie Dash and we hope you will join Team 834 at this pet-friendly event.
The Grand Rapids AIDS Walk & Run will take place on October 13th right downtown at Rosa Parks Circle.
Aids Walk & Run is the Grand Rapids Red Project’s annual fundraising event dedicated to raising money to support services related to education and elimination of HIV/AIDS in the Greater Grand Rapids area.
Register as an individual, join an existing team or form your own and raise money to fund prevention, care, and advocacy programs for thousands of men, women, and families affected in our community.
We must all work together to stop the spread of HIV!

Something on Your Mind?

If you ever need proof that personal brand matters...Kim got to see the @nasaartemis II launch in person as a direct result of her Big Deal Energyâ„¢. You need to work hard, show up authentically, and provide value. That was her message to a room full of students and young professionals at @western_michigan_pmi's theProject Collegiate Competition. The Big Deal Energyâ„¢ Workshop is on June 23. Register at the link in bio.
Employers think Gen Z is lazy, entitled, and will quit the second things get hard. That perception is keeping you out of the room before you ever get a chance to prove otherwise. The good news is, you can flip the script, but it will take some serious work and a personal brand, or as Kim Bode refers to it: Big Deal Energyâ„¢.Kim is speaking at theProjectâ„¢ Collegiate Event, hosted by the Project Management Institute Western Michigan Chapter on April 14. She'll cover how to build a personal brand that actually sounds like you (not ChatGPT) and how you can show your value through social, content and networking. Link in bio to learn more.
No one talks about how lonely it is to own a business. The tough decisions land on you, the business doesn't pause when you need a break, and nobody - not your employees or your spouse - really gets it. If you know a business owner, tell them they're doing a good job. It matters more than you know.
The growth stage is the hardest part of building a business. Kim was recently quoted in @corpmagazine on what she sees running the Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship: women who have built something, survived the hardest part, and are still doing everything themselves. The natural tendency to be humble and attached to their work creates unique business challenges for women; they put up walls because they can't be vulnerable. Meanwhile, when a woman CEO needs growth capital, she compiles three years of tax returns before a bank will schedule a meeting, while her male competitor closes the same deal over drinks. When women have access to the right resources, they grow and invest back.
