Shelley Irwin rocks…and once a month, she lets me rock with her on the WGVU Morning Show with Shelley Irwin on 88.5 FM on a segment we coined Your Biz, Your Town. On the 4th Friday of every month we invite 3 guests into the studio to chat about their community organization, exciting business news or a local event.

Our guests today….drum roll please….

Sweet Yo’s – Premium Frozen Yogurt
Sweet Yo’s was formed by a brother and sister team that are taking the local business world by storm. Rosa and Mario Piccione already run successful businesses (Ucello’s and Rosa’s Closet) in the west Michigan community, however they realized a niche was not being filled in East Grand Rapids.
Through their travels they noticed the growing trend of self-serve frozen yogurt shops on the east and west coast, and it dawned on them what a great business concept it would be for our community.
We encourage you to check out this locally owned and family run business – Sweet Yo’s – Treat Yourself.

Grand Cycling Classic
On July 28, the Herman Miller Grand Cycling Classic will host the 2012 USA Cycling Professional Men’s Criterium National Championship. See America’s top pro riders compete for the gold in an 80 km race along a 1.2 km course in downtown Grand Rapids. Historic brick-paved streets, tight turns and speeds of up to 40 mph in a 90-minute adrenaline rush for cyclists and spectators alike.
Volunteers are still needed. Support this great event in our community!

GR Givecamp
GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where technology professionals – from designers, developers and database administrators to marketers and web strategists – donate their time to provide solutions for non-profit organizations. Some organizations may need a new website or a renewal of an old one. For others, GiveCamp helps them make the leap from Excel spreadsheets to true donor databases. And for still others, this is an opportunity to think strategically, with the help of a consultant, about their social media presence or e-mail marketing. This is about matching the needs of non-profits with the talent of our local technology-loving community. Any 501(3) can apply to participate in GiveCamp. Accepted non-profits will be matched with a project liaison prior to GiveCamp who will help them shape their project and answer any critical questions to ensure the weekend is a success.

Applications are open for non-profits and volunteers.

As always, thanks to all of our amazing guests. If you are interested in being featured on the monthly WGVU segment, Your Biz, Your Town – just send us an *@*******gn.com“>email.

Kim was quoted in @incmagazine alongside business leaders talking about generative engine optimization, and her message is one worth hearing right now. The terminology is different, the tools are different, but the foundation is exactly the same.

Being open and being honest aren't the same thing, and according to Grace Gavin, most leaders haven't figured that out yet.

Grace is the co-founder of Know Honesty, and she joined Maddie on the Happy Hour Hustle podcast to talk about the communication gaps costing teams more than they realize.

Nobody will remember your job title, and frankly, it's not what's interesting about you, anyway.

The reason you're in those rooms is to be memorable, so find what that is and embrace it.

Thank you to @sheleadssocietymi for having us at your monthly meeting to talk Big Deal Energy

Fixing the skills gap means changing how we do things... not more AI 'solutions.'

In her latest blog, Kim talks about the need for mentorship, a framework, better job descriptions, and (this one's really important) managers who aren't afraid to give honest, timely feedback.
