Five Facebook Trends to Watch in 2018

A gray background with a green Facebook logo and the words, "Facebook isn't going anywhere yet, and these trends will prove important for your business."

Facebook may be going through a rough patch right now, and despite some big names leaving the platform, it’s unlikely that this current scandal will have longstanding negative effects. If you’re unaware of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, listen to our digital dudes explain it in our special edition podcast.
Aside from the latest scandal, here are the top 5 happenings on the platform this year that you need to be aware of:

Advertising Changes

While the scandal isn’t likely to hurt the platform in the long term, it’s already causing changes in the advertising landscape. It’s still uncertain as to the extent of which Facebook will go, but it has already made announcements that it will change what advertisers see about their audience when they target their ads. This is something we will keep a close eye on, and we’ll keep you filled in as things develop.

Video Content

Facebook recently updated its algorithm (which we already blogged about) and it is heavily favoring video content. This is because video content is more engaging. The videos don’t need to be feature films, just engaging. Live video is also a good option if you need to get timely content out fast. If you need some inspiration, check out some of the content we’ve been putting out.

Influencers

If you are late to the video party, don’t worry because it’s likely an influencer in your industry is already doing it.  There are users promoting products to thousands of people on Facebook every day and making a difference in people’s buying habits. Be forewarned, influencers are noticing their popularity and are likely going to start charging more for it.

Engagement

Engagement has always been important, but it’s even more important with Facebook’s new algorithm. Now it will take more than likes and asking for comments. Facebook has learned how to filter out people gaming the system, so you will need to make sure your content is more compelling than ever and will receive legitimate comments and shares.

AR

Mark Zuckerberg has made clear with his statements and actions, via the purchase of Oculus Rift, that he believes augmented reality has a real future on the platform.  While you won’t see AR much in the immediate future outside of Snapchat filters and some mobile games, it will play a crucial role for some brands.
Admittedly this is in the early stages, and we may not see anything come into fruition until later this year and early 2019. However, this is something you will want to stay up to date in, as it could have affects on more content options and unique ways to showcase your products.
